Funding Fertility

sperm eggFertility treatments are an expensive endeavor and there are very few group policies around the country that adequately cover the high health costs involved in fertility treatments. We, as a nation, are beginning to view infertility as a medical issue more often and many states are passing laws requiring fertility treatments and procedures to be included in group coverage insurance policies that meet certain requirements.

While this is meeting with stiff disapproval, largely at the hands of insurance companies and employers that find the cost of providing this service to their employees is much higher than they would have anticipated there are many wonderful benefits that are coming about as a result of this. Whether or not your company offers this benefit, it may be in your best interest to see if there is some rider policy to your insurance that you could purchase in order to cover infertility treatments.

Many infertility treatment insurance plans have strict requirements before they will pay for service and even then are limited in the services they will cover. The important thing to remember however is that testing, diagnosis, and treatment of even the most basic fertility issues can be cost prohibitive. In most cases you will pay far less for the insurance over a two year period of time than you would have paid for the initial testing sequence. That being said it is in your best interest to carefully compare the cost involved in having the insurance coverage, deductibles, exclusions, limitations, and co-payments carefully when deciding whether or not fertility insurance is in your best interest.

If you do not have infertility insurance and cannot get it in your area you should carefully consider your financial situation both now and the position in which you plan to find yourself once you have managed to conceive. You do not need to place your family in financial distress in order to conceive. Imagine if you do manage to conceive and find you need to take an immediate leave of absence from work in order to insure a healthy pregnancy? It happens on occasion and this can lead to serious financial distress for families that rely on two incomes. It's a difficult decision and one that needs to be made by both partners in order to avoid hard feelings to develop over time.

Many fertility clinics will offer payment options for those who qualify. This might be a good possibility for your needs when it comes to financing your fertility efforts. If you plan your finances as carefully as you plan your fertility treatment things should be well when the baby finally makes his or her appearance into the world.

If you feel that you are having more difficulty than you would like conceiving it is vitally important that you see if your state has infertility insurance that is available to the general population and make every effort to insure yourself as quickly as possible. Most companies require a year of service and/or documented proof of your fertility efforts before they will agree to pay for testing much less treatment.
