Relieving Stress
There is a great deal of disparity from one group of experts to another over whether or not stress has a significant and pronounced impact on the ability of a couple to conceive. Recent evidence is leaning in the direction of stress bringing unwanted complications to the fertility process. With this in mind, many of the following methods for reducing stress in your life can help not only relieve some of the pressure that often accompanies fertility treatment but also to reduce the stress that may become a road block to your ability to conceive or carry your baby to term.
Stress Relieving Activities
- Find a hobby. Believe it or not, there are many hobbies that help alleviate the stress of our day and not all of them cost an arm or a leg, though some can cost both so approach with caution. A favorite for me is knitting. You can prepare for your new arrival by learning the basics of knitting and pearling. It is often quite repetitive and a good way to work out aggression through creation. Hopefully it won't be long before you've gained the necessary skills to knit a baby blanket for your pending bundle of joy. Other great hobbies include model airplanes (not inexpensive but a good deal of fun), cross-stitching, woodworking, painting, drawing, reading, a musical instrument, or even a sport that you enjoy.
- Yoga. This is a great way to relieve stress. Those who practice yoga faithfully have also been known to tune their thoughts and energy into more positive pursuits. Positive thinking is never a bad idea when trying to conceive and the bending, stretching, and breathing exercises of yoga will help prepare your body for the eventual birth of your baby.
- Massage. Whether performed by a professional masseuse or the loving hands of your partner, a massage can be the perfect way to ease the stress out of your tired muscles and empty your mind of the things that often prevent us from truly relaxing.
- Take a day off. Go have your nails done, go see a matinee movie or even a double feature. Sometimes we get so caught up in the pursuit of fertility that every waking moment is dedicated to that goal. We work to make money to pay for the process, if we aren't working; we are worrying at the lack of results. Get your mind off the grind for a while so that you can come back with a clear head and some positive energy to direct towards your efforts to conceive.
If stress is creeping into the process of your fertility treatment perhaps it's time to take a step back and reassess your goals. This does not by any means you need to quit, only that it might be a good time to make changes in the way things are being handled. Creating a life is a work of art. It sometimes takes more time to complete than we hoped but the process should be as beautiful as the outcome. If the entire process is filled with stress and feelings of hopelessness, then it isn't the positive experience it should be. Talk with your doctor about ways to relieve stress throughout the treatment process. You might be amazed at the wonderful things he or she recommends.
