When Should you Seek Help?

baby ultra-soundMany women are quite surprised that they do not automatically conceive children as soon as they make the decision that now is the time to do so. It's actually Mother Nature's divine sense of irony that seems to make some women able to conceive when trying ever so valiantly not to do so while others would trade limbs in order to be able to conceive on demand. The problem is that while an inability to conceive right away may be frustrating it does not necessarily indicate a fertility problem of any sort. Some times nature simply has a mind of its own.

For many women the question of when is the appropriate time to seek the help of a fertility specialist is one that isn't easily answered. Just as there are no one size fits all fertility solutions there are also no one size fits all times or reasons for seeking a fertility specialist. Not everyone is made the same physically or emotionally. Dealing with the disappointment of failed attempts to conceive can completely shatter fragile emotions that may result.

A good rule of thumb is to seek the services of a specialist after a year of failed attempts. While this may seem like a very long time to some, you must keep in mind that it is only 12 failed attempts in the natural order of things. However, if you are experiencing extraordinary stress or pressure as a result of your inability to conceive you may want to discuss with your doctor if it may be wiser for you to seek the services of a fertility specialist sooner rather than later.

You will hear all kinds of wives tales about methods to assist in conceiving. It should take about a year to try them all out and you can have a lot of fun in the process. Too many people forget the importance of their partners in the process. Your partner isn't simply the sperm donor. He is your mate and the love of your life in the fertility process. Do not forget how to laugh, cry, and love with him during your quest for a new addition to your family or you will have forgotten one of the greatest things about bringing a child into the world-sharing the love of your family with another living being.

To answer the question of when it is the right time to seek the services of a fertility specialist-the best time is when you and your doctor agree that it is the time for further investigation. If you jump into the office of a specialist too soon you will risk paying a great deal of money you don't need to pay for the process. However, if you are having serious difficulty dealing with the frustrations of not conceiving then your circumstances may benefit from more immediate attention by a fertility specialist. You should take care that you communicate closely with your OB/GYN throughout the process, as he or she knows your situation best and can provide timely advice for your specific situation.
